On the occasion of successfully completing its inaugural residency program, Longlati Foundation is pleased to announce that Zhang Yibei (b. 1992) has been selected as the artist-in-residence for the next year (2022-23). This month, she will take up residence in the Foundation’s artist studio at Bund Space in Shanghai for a year-long creative practice.

The practice of post-90s Chinese artists is one of the threads of the Longlati Foundation’s long-term focus. While the Foundation hopes to advance its collection and sponsorship programs, it also hopes to integrate its unique resources to provide more opportunities for young emerging artists to realize more scalable and sustainable art projects. All works completed during the artist’s residency will be their own.
Longlati Foundation will support the artist’s solo exhibition at the end of the residency, combining its collection with the artist’s creative and theoretical paths from the early years of her artistic career. The solo exhibition “Dust that Rides the Wind” is the result of the first residency program.

As the next recipient of the Longlati Artist-in-residence Program, Zhang Yibei will collaborate with Longlati Foundation and participate in the discussion of curatorial and collecting directions. She will also conduct the Foundation’s space in the Shanghai Bund as a window to launch quarterly open studio events and engage in dialogues with scholars, critics, and curators from the regions.
About the Artist
Zhang Yibei‘s works focus on exploring materials (substances). Externally, he focuses more on the composition of materials: silicone, glass, and chips are all composed mainly of silicon, but the different combinations of molecules make them appear completely different. Internally, the focus is on the extension of the “material”; in contrast, it is not only the material that the artist uses to create the work, but also the properties of the material itself that shape the artist, making the artist an extension and feedback of the properties of the material.
Zhang Yibei (born in 1992 in Daqing, Heilongjiang Province) currently lives and works in Beijing. 2017 graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MFA in Sculpture, 2015 graduated from the University of the Arts London with a BA in Sculpture, 2019 received the 7th Tomorrow’s Sculpture Award – Annual Award. Recent solo exhibitions include: “A Vase in Everything” (BANK, Shanghai, 2021), “Coupling Relation Between a Prisoner, a Lover and a Spy” (Qi Mu Space, Beijing, 2019), “Stirrups” (Royal College of Art, London, UK, 2017), and “The Pink Slipper on The Side of the Wall” (RCA Project Space, London, UK, 2016).
